New Delhi, May 20 (IANS). A senior doctor of Sir Ganga Ram Hospital on Wednesday advised people to avoid direct sunlight and drink adequate amount of water in view of the scorching heat prevailing in various parts of the country.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), there is a possibility of severe heat in Delhi-NCR, Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh this week. The weather agency has issued an orange alert for Delhi-NCR, warning residents of prolonged extreme heat-like conditions in the coming days.
Speaking to IANS, Dr Atul Kakar, senior consultant, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, said that people are facing three types of heat-related problems.
He said that one is heat exhaustion, in which the person feels weak, lethargic, suffering from fever and without energy. The second type is heat-related cramps, such as muscle cramps, he said. The doctor further said that finally, the serious heat-related complication is heat stroke, which is an emergency.
He said that so far this year, complaints of heat cramps and heat exhaustion have been registered in Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. Patients are coming with complaints of fatigue, muscle pain and fever. All these problems are related to excessive heat.
D. Kakar also told ways to avoid the effects of heat wave.
He said that one should avoid going out in direct sunlight. The sun’s heat is at its peak between 12 noon to 3 pm. If people have to go out during this period, they should cover themselves properly. Use an umbrella or something else to cover your head. Also, keep drinking ORS water, lassi etc. to avoid dehydration in the body. Such measures will help people protect themselves.
Dr Kakar advised senior citizens and people suffering from health problems like cancer, kidney and heart diseases to avoid direct sunlight at all costs. He said that such patients are badly affected by heat. Therefore, they should drink adequate amount of water and keep taking medicines on time.
He also stressed that any kind of additional medicines should be taken only after consulting the doctor.
