Adhikamas is considered an extremely sacred and rare spiritual occasion in Hinduism. It is also called Purushottam month, because this month is dedicated to Lord Vishnu himself. It is believed that the results of fasting, chanting, meditation and donations done during this period are many times more than during normal times. This is why devotees spend this entire month in meditation, worship and listening to stories.
🕉️ Why is Adhikamas special?
Adhikamas occurs once every three years and is considered an additional month in the calendar. According to religious beliefs, this time is best for self-purification and spiritual progress. This month is said to be the favorite period of Lord Vishnu, hence it is named “Purushottam Maas”. During this period, any religious work, charity or work done with devotion is considered extremely fruitful.
📖 Importance of every day story
There is a tradition of listening and reading different mythological stories related to each day in Adhikamas. Deep teachings of religion, truth, devotion and life values are hidden in these stories. It is believed that the devotee who listens to Katha regularly throughout Adhikamas, negativity reduces in his life and the flow of positive energy increases.
These stories are considered important not only from the religious point of view, but also for mental peace and spiritual balance. Every story inspires a person to do good deeds in his life and follow the path of religion.
🌺 Special importance of charity and virtue
Donation in Adhikamas is considered a very auspicious and fruitful deed. In this month, providing food, clothes, water, money and helping the needy provides special virtue. According to the scriptures, even a small donation made during this time gives manifold results and brings happiness and prosperity in life.
Devotees donate donations to temples, food to the poor, and distribute religious books during this month. By doing this one gets special blessings of Lord Vishnu and Mother Lakshmi.
🌿 Fasting and devotional practice
Keeping fast in Adhikamas and worshiping Lord Vishnu is considered extremely auspicious. Devotees take bath in the morning and chant the mantra “Om Namo Bhagwate Vasudevaya” and worship the Lord with Tulsi leaves, yellow flowers and lamps. Recitation of Vishnu Sahastranam and Bhagwat Katha in this month is also considered particularly fruitful.
Night vigil, bhajan-kirtan and satsang infuse spiritual energy into the environment, which provides peace and stability to the mind.
