New Delhi, June 11 (IANS). The risk of falling increases with increasing age. A small carelessness or poor balance can cause serious injury to the elderly. In such a situation, Yogasana is proving to be a safe and effective solution.

According to the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, regular yoga practice can reduce the risk of falls in the elderly to a great extent. The World Health Organization also warns that falls are the leading cause of injury and disability in the elderly. Loss of balance, muscle weakness and joint stiffness become common problems in people above 60 years of age. Due to all this, there is difficulty in everyday tasks and the risk of falling increases.

Research shows that yoga is the best solution to these problems. Regular yoga significantly improves body balance, coordination and physical mobility. A systematic review and meta-analysis analyzed studies conducted on people over 60 years of age. The results were shocking. Both balance and mobility were found to be better in the elderly who did yoga, which clearly reduced the risk of falling.

Easy yoga asanas like Vrikshasana, Tadasana, Bhujangasana and Setu Bandhasana strengthen the muscles of legs, waist and back. These asanas increase the ability to balance and help in keeping the body stable. Also, yoga keeps the mind calm, reduces fear and anxiety, which increases self-confidence.

According to the Ministry of AYUSH, yoga not only increases physical fitness but also helps the elderly in leading a healthy and active life. Experts say that even doing yoga for just 20-30 minutes daily can be beneficial. In the beginning, it is better to practice under the supervision of a yoga instructor, especially for those who have any pre-existing medical condition.
