Lucknow: Lohri is a major festival celebrated in North India, especially in Punjab, Haryana and Delhi. It is a major festival of the Punjabi and Sikh community, which is celebrated with great pomp every year on 13 January. On this day, people light a sacred fire outside the house in the evening, in which they offer things like peanuts, maize, rewari, gajak, sesame and jaggery. By circling around it, prayers are offered to the fire god for good harvest, happiness, prosperity and prosperity. The festival also marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring, as well as a celebration of the harvest of the new Rabi crop.
Auspicious time to light fire in Lohri 2026
This year Lohri will be celebrated on Tuesday, 13 January 2026. Auspicious time will start from 5:43 pm till 7:15 pm (as per Delhi/NCR and surrounding areas).
According to many sources, it is considered best to light a fire during the Pradosh Kaal and Twilight Muhurta after sunset (approximately 5:41 to 6:08 pm). During this period, do parikrama 7 or 11 times.

How to perform Lohri puja and rituals
– Prepare a pile of dry wood outside the house in the evening.
– Light the fire at the auspicious time and narrate the popular story of Dulla Bhatti (which is the story of the brave farmer warrior who helps the poor).
– Offer sesame, jaggery, peanuts, maize, rewari, gajak etc. in the fire.
– Sing folk songs, do Bhangra and Giddha while roaming around the fire.
– Family and neighbors come together to distribute Prasad and enjoy.
– Traditional dishes like Makki ki Roti and Sarson ka Saag are prepared and eaten at home.
This festival is a symbol of collective happiness, unity and gratitude towards nature.
