Maruti Suzuki WagonR has crossed the production mark of 35 lakh units in India, which shows its tremendous popularity.
Maruti Suzuki has achieved a major milestone in the production of WagonR in India. More than 35 lakh units of this tall-boy hatchback have been made so far. This success across three generations shows how popular WagonR has been in the entry-level car segment and has remained the choice of Indian families for over 20 years.
Launched in December 1999, Maruti Suzuki WagonR quickly gained recognition for its spacious cabin, good usability and easy driving. With time this car kept improving according to the changing needs of the customers. Today, the WagonR is among the marquee Maruti models that have achieved huge production figures, including the Alto and Swift.
Commenting on the achievement, Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and CEO, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said, “WagonR has been greatly appreciated for its iconic tall-boy design, spacious interiors and excellent mileage, which perfectly reflects the needs and expectations of the customers. He expressed his gratitude to the customers for their continued support and reiterated their commitment to deliver the ‘Joy of Mobility’ for the generations to come.”
The WagonR is currently being manufactured at Maruti Suzuki’s Gurugram and Manesar plants in Haryana, which form the backbone of the company’s domestic production network. There have been many important milestones in its journey, including the introduction of LPG and CNG options, automated manual transmission, improved safety features and new trim levels.
WagonR was launched globally even earlier. Suzuki launched the WagonR in Japan in 1993 as a small, semi-bonnet mini wagon. After being successful in Japan, it was introduced in India, Europe and other markets. Today, WagonR is sold in more than 75 countries and territories and its total worldwide sales are expected to exceed 10 million units by August 2025.
The current generation WagonR in India is based on Suzuki’s fifth-generation Heartect platform. There has also been a major improvement on the safety front, where 6 airbags are now being provided as standard, along with ABS, EBD and electronic stability control. Talking about the features, it has features like 7-inch SmartPlay Studio touchscreen, smartphone connectivity, Bluetooth and voice commands. Further strengthening its legacy, the WagonR has also been India’s best-selling car for the last four financial years.
