A top company official told PTI that Tata Motors plans to ramp up production of electric vehicles as demand for its battery-powered models is outpacing manufacturing activities by a huge margin. The domestic automaker has been receiving an average of 5,500-6,000 bookings for its EV range in the last two months.
Tata Motors could supply around 3,300-3,400 EVs last month, thus adding a significant number to the backlog. Thus, the automaker is trying to increase capacity by increasing sourcing of semiconductors. For this purpose, the company took various steps like design modification and sourcing from multiple vendors to increase the availability of required semiconductors.
Chandra also said that the demand for electric vehicles could be much higher than the 30 per cent level because “when the inflection point is hit, growth becomes absolutely uncontrollable” by 2030. He added that the main factors limiting growth will be the supply ramp-up and the pace of capacity and ecosystem development.
He added that despite several ramp-ups over time, the company has not been able to meet the demand. “So definitely the demand, we believe, will go beyond this 30 per cent mark,” he said.
Currently, Tata Motors sells three models in its electric portfolio- Nexon EV, Tigor EV and Xpres-T. The company recently unveiled a new coupe style concept electric SUV, called the Curve, which it plans to launch in the next two years.
