Guwahati, October 21 (). The Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the case of sudden death of Assam’s popular singer Zubeen Garg is now investigating in Singapore. Two senior SIT officials, CID special DGP Munna Prasad Gupta and SP rank officer Tarun Goyal reached Singapore on Monday. These officers are scheduled to meet the Singapore Police on Tuesday.
It is believed that both the officers will try to collect information about the last days of Zubeen Garg, CCTV footage of the hotel and other evidence.
Zubeen Garg died on September 19, when he was in Singapore to attend an event organized by the Assam Association. He was on a yacht, where he was accompanied by his manager Siddharth Sharma, band members Shekharjyoti Goswami and Amritprabha Mahant, organizer Shyamkanu Mahant and his cousin Sandipan Garg. Now all of them have been arrested in connection with Zubeen’s death and are currently lodged in Baksa District Jail.
After these arrests, public sentiments are on the rise in Assam. Last week, when all the five accused were brought to Baksa district jail under heavy police security, massive protests broke out outside the jail. The crowd of protesters became angry and demanded that Zubeen Garg’s manager Siddharth Sharma and event organizer Shyamkanu Mahant be presented before the public.
The situation worsened when the crowd started pelting stones. A woman police officer was injured and several police vehicles were damaged in this violence. To control the situation, the police had to resort to lathicharge and many protesters were arrested.
In view of this increasing tension, the district administration immediately took strict steps. District Magistrate Gautam Das issued an order under Section 163 of the Indian Civil Defense Code (BNSS) banning all types of gatherings, rallies, demonstrations and processions within 500 meters of Baksa jail. Apart from this, carrying weapons like sticks, knives, spears, swords and stones or inflammable objects like firecrackers etc. has also been completely banned.
The administration says that the situation near the jail complex is very sensitive and there is a strong possibility of disturbance of peace. In such a situation, if any person violates these rules, strict legal action will be taken against him.
