In the name of security, three happy families were ruined in the pursuit of a daily wage of Rs 310 or zero.
1.25 year old innocent mother’s Aanchal and 6 year old Prince are waiting for ‘mummy’ to return; Allegations of negligence on the contractor
Jaipur. A very painful accident that took place on Thursday in Gandhi Path West, Vaishali Nagar of the capital Jaipur ruined the world of three poor families. Here, during excavation in the basement of an under-construction multi-storey building, a huge amount of soil suddenly collapsed from above. Three migrant women laborers working there died due to suffocation after being buried under the debris. The deceased have been identified as Sunita Devi, Anuti Kumari and Pratima Kumari, who were originally from Bihar and had come to Jaipur to earn their living. This horrific accident not only took three lives, but also snatched away the shadow of mother’s love from the heads of four innocent children forever.
“We had dinner together in the afternoon, suddenly there was a loud noise”
Seema Devi, a female laborer who was present there at the time of the accident and worked with her, tearfully described the horrific scene. Seema said:
“In the afternoon, we all sat together and had dinner and returned to our work with a smile. No one had any idea that after a few minutes, death would start looming. Suddenly there was a loud sound, we ran and saw that a large part of the soil had collapsed and the three women were completely buried under it.”
According to eyewitnesses, fellow workers risked their lives and immediately removed the soil with shovels and hands and took him out to the hospital in an unconscious condition, but by then it was too late. Doctors at Sawai Mansingh (SMS) Hospital declared all three dead.
Painful aspect: 1.25 year old baby longing for mother’s milk, staring at the door
The most heart-touching and eye-watering pictures of this accident are of those innocent children who do not even know the meaning of death.
Girl crying with hunger: The deceased Pratima Kumari has a small daughter of only 1.25 years. She cries when she is hungry and keeps looking towards the door thinking that maybe her mother will come soon and hug her. Other women of the colony are trying unsuccessfully to control her.
“Mummy will come soon and play with me”: Prince, the 6-year-old son of the second deceased Sunita Devi, has not yet been told the truth about his mother’s death. She said innocently, “Papa has taken mom to the hospital because mud had fallen on her. My mom loves me very much, she will come soon and then play with me.” While her 4 year old younger sister Pinky is continuously sobbing remembering her mother.
Daily wage of ₹310 and ‘zero security’, serious allegations against contractor
After the accident, there is huge anger against the builder and contractor in the construction site and labor colony. The workers directly allege that safety standards were flouted in extremely risky work like basement.
Seema Devi angrily told that they were brought from Bihar and were being made to work on a daily wage of just ₹ 310, but in the name of safety, they were neither given helmets, nor safety jackets, nor were any arrangements made for retaining walls (iron or wooden supports) to stop the mud. The workers say that if the contractor had made proper security arrangements, the lives of three mothers could have been saved today.
Three deaths and serious questions raised on the system
This accident at Gandhi Path West exposes the illegal and unsafe construction work going on in Jaipur. This incident raises many sharp questions on the administration:
Who allowed such deep excavation without adequate safety equipment and engineering parameters?
Did these laborers have any registration or insurance under Labor Department rules?
Who is really responsible for these deaths and why has strict action not been taken against the builder-contractor till now?
At present, Vaishali Nagar police station has kept the three bodies in the mortuary and started investigating the case. The victims’ families and labor organizations have demanded immediate arrest of the culprits and huge compensation for the orphaned children. The law will take its course, but this negligence of the system has given lifelong pain to those innocent people whose childhood was buried forever under this collapsed soil.
