Kolkata . A new political debate has erupted in West Bengal before the upcoming assembly elections. Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Ramakrishna Paramhansa by adding ‘Swami’ to his name, but West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has objected to this. Prime Minister Narendra Modi wrote on social media platform After this, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee responded to Prime Minister Modi’s post and opposed the use of the word ‘Swami’. He wrote, “Once again shocked. The Prime Minister has shown his cultural insensitivity towards the great personalities of Bengal. Today is the birth anniversary of Yugavatar (incarnation of God in our era) Sri Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsadev. While paying homage to the great saint on this auspicious occasion, the Prime Minister added the inappropriate prefix ‘Swami’ to his name.”
Mamata Banerjee further wrote, “As everyone knows, Sri Ramakrishna is reverentially addressed as ‘Thakur’ (meaning, Lord). His ascetic disciples created the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission after the death of their Guru. Those sages were called ‘Swami’ as per Indian traditions. The Guru i.e. Acharya himself continued to be called Thakur.”
