New Delhi. The incident of demolition of the statue of Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi at Tavistock Square in London is being condemned all around. The incident occurred just three days before International Non -Violence Day, when preparations for Gandhi Jayanti (2 October) are in full swing. The British High Commissioner Lindi Cameron in India condemned the incident. This bronze statue, established in 1968, reminds of Gandhiji’s student life at University College London.
The inscription engraved on the statue ‘Mahatma Gandhi, 1869–1948’ is a symbol of his global contribution. Every year on 2 October, Gandhi Jayanti is celebrated with flower garlands and hymns, which is recognized by the United Nations as International Non -Violence Day. In such a situation, such an act is being criticized a few days before Gandhi Jayanti.
The British High Commissioner Lindi Cameron in India expressed disappointment on the tampering of Gandhiji’s statue by posting on the social media platform ‘X’.
The British High Commission issued its statement saying, “There is disappointment and sorrow due to the sabotage with Gandhiji’s statue. The Metropolitan Police has started an investigation. Their teachings of tolerance, peace and non -violence are eternal and will always continue to unite people. This is what I will remember on Gandhi Jayanti this year and every year.”
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs also reacted and described the incident as shameful. The ministry said that the British government is expected to punish the culprits severely. At the same time, the Indian High Commission has demanded immediate action, calling it a ‘violent attack on the idea of non -violence’.

Black sprays found objectionable slogans on the basis of the statue, which show racial hatred. The Metropolitan police have started an investigation, considering it as a ‘racial abetment crime’, but no arrests have been made so far.
