Chandigarh. Haryana Director General of Police (DDP) Shatrujit Kapoor has been sent on leave over the suicide of an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer. Om Prakash Singh has been given additional charge in his place. Om Prakash Singh is a 1991 batch IPS. His retirement is on December 31 this year. Chandigarh Police arrested Haryana IPS officer Y. FIR has been registered on the basis of the “note” left by Puran Kumar. Puran Kumar’s alleged suicide took place on October 7. Hours after this FIR, Puran Kumar’s wife and senior IAS officer Amneet P. Kumar had requested Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini to register an FIR and ensure suspension and arrest of the officers named in the final note by her husband. Till now, Puran Kumar’s wife has not given permission to conduct post-mortem of his body, saying that “powerful and high-ranking officials of Haryana are involved in this case.”
Even after eight days have passed, the body is still kept in the mortuary. The standoff continues between the state government and Puran Kumar’s wife over the arrest of DGP Shatrujit Singh Kapoor and removed Rohtak SP Narendra Byrnia.
Amid rapid change in political developments, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi will pay tribute to the late IPS officer at the residence of the late IPS officer in Chandigarh on Tuesday.
State opposition leader Bhupinder Hooda described the death as extremely tragic and said, “Our only demand is that the culprits be punished. It is the responsibility of the government to provide justice. The government should not deviate from its responsibility.”
Showing strictness, the Punjab State Scheduled Caste Commission on Monday expressed dissatisfaction over the report of Chandigarh Police in the suicide case. According to the police report, a special investigation team has been formed and the investigation is in progress. Punjab State Scheduled Caste Commission Chairman Jasvir Singh Garhi said the report did not include a copy of the FIR, making it unclear whether an FIR has been registered against the 14 officers named in the late officer’s note. He directed that the police should take immediate action and arrest the 14 persons named in the note.
