Jaipur | A painful accident occurred late Sunday night at Sawai Mansingh (SMS) Hospital, the largest government hospital in the capital Jaipur. 8 patients died in a fire in the neuro ICU of the hospital’s trauma center, including 3 women. After the accident, there was chaos in the hospital, many patients were immediately shifted to other wards. Sudden smoke started to rise from the neuro ICU ward of the Trauma Center at 11.20 pm on Sunday night. The fire broke out in the store room, where paper files, medical equipment and blood sample tubes were kept. In a few moments, the fire engulfed the ICU region. According to the hospital administration, the primary reason for the fire is believed to be a short circuit. However, at present, the Electricity Department and the Fire Safety Team are engaged in investigation.
There were 24 patients in ICU, 16 rescued 16: 11 patients were admitted in neuro ICU at the time of the accident and 13 patients were admitted in ICU next to it. When the fire spread, nursing staff and duty doctors immediately played the alarm and activated the fire alert system. The fire department team reached the spot within 10 minutes and the fire was controlled after about an hour of hard work.
The Nodal Officer of the Trauma Center said that, “Most of the patients died due to suffocation. Some patients were scorched, who were shifted immediately.”
Identification of the dead: The hospital administration has so far confirmed the eight dead, three are women. The bodies have been sent for postmortem. At present, the process of identification of the dead is going on. Family members have been informed.
There was a stir after the accident: There was chaos in the hospital premises as soon as the news of the fire broke out. Hundreds of patients came out. Police and fire department teams controlled the situation. The power of the trauma center was cut off for some time so that the fire could not spread.
After the incident, state government officials and Jaipur district administration also reached the hospital. Many serious patients have been shifted to the wards of the main building.
The government formed a 6 -member inquiry committee: The Rajasthan government has formed a 6 -member high -level committee to investigate this entire accident. In this, Ambarish Kumar, Government Secretary, Department of Medical Education, has appointed the department’s Commissioner Iqbal Khan as the chairman of this committee. The five members include Hospital Administration (Rajmes) Additional Director Mukesh Kumar Meena, Rajmes Chief Engineer Chandan Singh Meena, PWD Chief Engineer (Electricity) Ajay Mathur, SMS Medical College Additional Principal Dr. RK Jain and Chief Fire Officer of Municipal Corporation.
This committee will submit a detail report of the fire incident at the Trauma Center. The system will be investigated in detail for the causes of the fire, the arrangements to control the fire, the safety of the patients and the arrangements for them out of there, to save the hospital from such arson incidents in future, such an accident will not recur.
SMS Hospital in Rajasthan is the largest medical center in the state, where thousands of patients come daily. In such a situation, fire at a sensitive place like ICU raises serious questions on hospital safety standards.
In recent years, similar fire incidents have occurred in many hospitals of the country – patients were killed due to short circuits in hospitals in Mumbai, Bhopal, Ahmedabad, and Delhi. Experts believe that more electricity and old wiring systems in ICU wards are the main causes of such incidents.

Former CM Ashok Gehlot wrote- 7 people are very sad due to a fire in the ICU of Troma Center of SMS Hospital. I pray to God that at least there should be loss of life in this accident. May the Lord give the departed souls in your shrines and set the injured soon. The state government should conduct a high level inquiry into the incident and ensure that such accidents do not recur anywhere in the future.
The state health minister issued a statement in the morning and said – “This is a very unfortunate incident. The government has ordered an inquiry. The culprits will not be spared under any circumstances. We will compensate the families of the deceased and the government will bear the entire expenses for the treatment of the injured.”
