New Delhi. National Council of Educational Research and Training i.e. NCERT had released the new book of Social Science for Class 8 on 24 February. But some things were found in one chapter of the book which were not considered right. This chapter is titled ‘Role of Judiciary in our Society’ and ranges from pages 125 to 142. After the matter came to light, the Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education immediately directed that the distribution of this book be stopped till further notice. Following the order, NCERT has banned the supply of the book. It is noteworthy that many judges and senior advocates had expressed their strong objection to this chapter. NCERT has said that it has great respect for the judiciary and considers it the protector of the Constitution and the rights of the people. According to NCERT, the mistake that happened was unintentional. There was no intention to reduce the dignity of any institution. Now this chapter will be rewritten. For this, advice will be taken from the concerned authorities. The corrected book will be given to the students at the beginning of the academic session 2026-27.
Expressing regret over this mistake, NCERT has also apologized and said that full care will be taken to ensure that such mistake does not happen in future.
Issuing a statement in this regard late on Wednesday night, NCERT said that the new book for Class 8 Social Science was released by the National Council of Educational Research and Training. The distribution of the book has been immediately banned after some inappropriate content and judgment errors were found in Chapter 4 ‘Role of Judiciary in our Society’.
It is noteworthy that the judiciary has taken cognizance of this issue. A hearing on this matter is to be held in the court of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court on Thursday itself. Meanwhile, on Wednesday, the Department of School Education and Literacy, Ministry of Education took cognizance of the matter and directed that the supply and distribution of the book should be completely suspended till further notice.
NCERT has stopped the distribution of the book following the instructions of the Ministry. The Council says that it gives the highest respect to the Indian judiciary and considers it the guardian of the Constitution and protector of fundamental rights.
According to NCERT, the error in the concerned chapter is completely unintentional. There was no intention to harm the dignity of any constitutional institution.
The Council also reiterated that the new books aim to strengthen constitutional literacy among students, develop a sense of respect for institutions and strengthen their understanding of the democratic system. The concerned chapter will be rewritten in consultation with the appropriate authority. The revised book will be made available to the students at the beginning of the academic session 2026-27.
The Council has expressed deep regret over this error and apologized and has reiterated its commitment towards institutional decorum and constitutional values.
