Chandigarh. Taking an important decision, the Punjab Cabinet under the leadership of Bhagwant Singh Mann has approved the ‘Jagat Jyoti Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar (Amendment) Bill-2026’. Under this amendment, a provision has been made for punishment up to life imprisonment for the culprits in cases of sacrilege of Sri Guru Granth Sahib. According to government information, this bill will be presented in the special session of the Punjab Assembly on Monday. The government says that this step has been taken with the aim of protecting religious sentiments and maintaining peace and harmony in the society. It was said in the Cabinet meeting that in the last few years, many incidents of desecration of holy scriptures have come to light, which have hurt the religious sentiments of the people and also created a situation of social tension. Although existing sections of the Indian Judicial Code deal with such cases, the government believes that the existing punishment regime is not harsh enough.
In view of this, the government has decided to make it more stringent by amending the existing law of 2008. Under the new proposed provisions, stringent punishment will be ensured against the culprits in such cases, which will include punishment up to life imprisonment.
The government said that this law will prove to be effective in preventing any kind of malicious activities and will help in maintaining communal harmony along with strengthening law and order in the state.
This decision is being considered as a big step by the Punjab government towards protecting religious sentiments and strengthening social unity.
