Udaipur. A ‘wonderful confluence of tradition and faith’ was seen today at the historic Manak Chowk located in the City Palace of Udaipur, the city of lakes. The 77th Shri Ekling Diwan of Mewar and Dr. Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar, President of Maharana Mewar Charitable Foundation, performed Holika puja and lighting the fire as per the centuries-old royal tradition.
Royal splendor and ‘Maharana Salute’
The festival started when Dr. Lakshyaraj Singh Mewar reached Manak Chowk with traditional royal attire and his entourage. The Palace Guards present there presented him the glorious “Maharana Salute”, which is a symbol of the ancient military and state tradition of Mewar.
Holika worship as per Vedic tradition
Dr. Lakshyaraj Singh duly worshiped Holika amid the Vedic chanting of learned pundits.
Rituals: They offered traditional Odhani, flower garland and quince to Holika.
Lighting: After circling Holika with the members of the royal family, the fire was lit as per the scriptures.
Gathering of sages and saints and ‘Aaska’
On this occasion, special respect was given to the saints, mahants and sadhus who came from various monasteries and temples of Mewar region. Dr. Lakshyaraj Singh garlanded him and presented him with quince. The revered saints bestowed “Asaka” (sacred blessings) as a blessing for the happiness and prosperity of Mewar.
‘Gair’ dance and glimpse of Mewari culture
After Holika Dahan, Manak Chowk became drenched in the colors of folk culture.
Folk Art: Traditional ‘Gair’ dance was organized in which artists displayed their art while dancing to Mewari Phag and songs.
Phool Phag: The vibrancy of Mewari culture was presented by playing Holi of flowers (Phool Phag).
This event is not only a festival, but is a proof of the cultural heritage of Mewar which has preserved its roots, dignity and spiritual values with full dignity even in the age of modernity.
