New Delhi. The Central Government has decided to terminate the custody of Ladakh-based social activist and engineer Sonam Wangchuk with immediate effect. This decision was taken by the Home Ministry after reviewing the situation.
The government said in its statement that maintaining an atmosphere of peace, stability and mutual trust in Ladakh is its priority. With this objective in mind, this step has been taken to pursue constructive and meaningful dialogue with all parties. According to the Home Ministry, Sonam Wangchuk was detained on 26 September 2025 under the National Security Act (NSA) on the orders of the District Magistrate following the law and order situation that arose on 24 September 2025 in Leh.
The government said Wangchuk has served almost half of his detention period. Given the prevailing circumstances and after extensive deliberations, it has been decided to revoke his custody.
The statement also said that the government is in constant dialogue with various stakeholders and community leaders to address the aspirations and concerns of the people of Ladakh. The government also expressed hope that issues related to the region would be resolved through dialogue and other appropriate forums including high-level committees.
The Central Government reiterated that all necessary security and developmental steps will continue to be taken for Ladakh.
