Amidst a serious crisis, Iran has shocked the whole world by making a new announcement. Its military – particularly the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) navy – has clearly stated that the Strait of Hormuz is no longer the limited, controlled area it used to be. Now its range of operation has been extended to a distance of 500 kilometers. He further said that this entire area – from Jask and Sirik to Qeshm Island and beyond Greater Tumb Island – has now become Iran’s area of operations. This announcement has been made at a time when tensions with the United States and Israel are at their peak.

What did Iran say?

Mohammad Akbarzadeh, political deputy chief of the Iranian Navy, told Tasnim news agency that previously, the Strait of Hormuz was considered a small area around islands such as Hormuz and Hengam. Now, everything has changed. “Today, instead of an area of 20-30 miles, it has grown into a vast area spanning 200-300 miles – about 500 kilometers,” he said. Rear Admiral Akbarzadeh reiterated on Tuesday that the old criteria no longer apply regarding the Strait of Hormuz, according to Press TV. “The Iranian Navy will now operate in accordance with its strategic doctrine throughout this vast area.”

We will shed our blood, but will not give even an inch of land’
Iranian officials issued a stern warning, declaring that no country or ship would be able to intrude into their territorial waters. “Iran is closely monitoring every activity taking place throughout the region. We will protect our national interests and our waters.” They further vowed, “We are ready to shed our blood, but we will not give even an inch of our land.” Iranian armed forces vowed to defend the country’s borders and maritime zones with all their might. Meanwhile, the Iranian military has also issued a new rule: From now on, the only safe way to pass through the Strait of Hormuz will be a specific route determined by Iran. Any ship that deviates from this designated route will face military action.

What will be its global impact?
The Strait of Hormuz is the world’s most important sea route. Millions of barrels of oil pass through this strait every day. If there is a disruption here, oil prices could skyrocket around the world. This decision of Iran reflects its strong stance regarding regional security. However, at the same time, it could increase tensions with the United States and its allies.
