Bhopal. The father and brother of dowry death victim Twisha Sharma on Tuesday accused the police of following ‘someone else’s orders’ and ‘fabricating a story’. The allegation was made after Madhya Pradesh Police Commissioner Kailash Makwana and Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) gave ‘contradictory’ statements about the theft that took place at the victim’s in-laws house. Earlier on Tuesday, a Bhopal court refused to consider the defense’s oral plea seeking permission to visit the house of the accused and retired judge Giribala Singh in connection with a recent theft. The court said that such a demand can be considered only through a formal written application.
Speaking to , Twisha’s brother Harshit Sharma said, “The theft happened at the very last moment, and not only the jewelery but also the documents were stolen. Surprisingly, the members who were sleeping downstairs had no idea that the thieves had entered the house and also broke the iron cupboard and lockers. These things have not been told by us, but by the defense lawyer.”
Taking a dig at the police, Twisha’s brother said, “Earlier we used to consider them (police) incompetent for not filing FIR, tampering with evidence etc. But when you look at the whole picture, there are clearly competent efforts. They should be given an award for following orders without worrying about their reputation.”
He alleged, “Actually the police had reached the spot even before the theft took place and caught the thieves who were running away with the documents. However, the statements given by the Police Commissioner and the ACP are different from each other.”
“We still don’t know how many thieves there were, what they stole and what was seized. I think they need some time to piece together their story,” he said.
The victim’s brother said that the system is helping the accused, hence getting justice seems difficult. Still, we have hope.”
Twisha’s father Navnidhi Sharma said that four different people have told different things about this theft incident, “first the media, then the ACP, the police commissioner and finally the lawyer during the court hearing today.”
He asked, “So which of these should we consider correct?”
Twisha’s father also said, “It was a strange theft, in which the thieves had come to steal the documents, and that too, in a way, under the surveillance of the police, because the police team was patrolling at that time.”
“The police caught the thieves and later released them,” he claimed.
Navnidhi Sharma demanded a thorough investigation into this matter. Apart from this, Sharma also targeted the police, alleging ‘institutional bias’. He alleged, “The police are capable, that is why they catch the accused when necessary and do not arrest the culprits when it is not necessary. We want to know from the very first day whose orders they are following.”
He also demanded that the case be transferred to Delhi for “fairness and transparency”.
