-The journalist team took information about PM e-Bus Sewa scheme in Chandigarh. A press team of senior editors and reporters from Rajasthan State paid a courtesy call on Gulab Chand Kataria, Governor of Punjab and Administrator of Chandigarh (UT) during the visit by Press Information Bureau (PIB), Jaipur. During this, the objective of the press tour was discussed in detail. On the last day of the press tour, the team received information about PM e-Bus Sewa scheme in Chandigarh Transport Department. On this occasion, Chief Operational Manager of Transport Department, Shri Yashjit Gupta said that a total of 428 buses were approved for Chandigarh city under the PM e-Bus Sewa Scheme by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India. Presently 80 electric buses were operating in the city. With the addition of 25 new buses, this number has increased to 105.
He informed that the newly inducted 12 meter long low-floor, air-conditioned electric buses are capable of running about 224 kilometers on a single charge. These include 400 mm low-floor facility, power operated ramp for disabled passengers and other state-of-the-art facilities, seating capacity for 36 passengers and 20 standing passengers, special space for wheelchair, air suspension, front disc brake, passenger information display and voice-based next stop announcement system.
He said that for security and monitoring purposes, CCTV cameras (including passenger area, driver behaviour, reverse and dashboard views), GPS devices as per AIS-140 standard, panic buttons connected to the Command Control Center of the State Transport Authority and stop request buttons have been installed in the buses for the convenience of the passengers.
Gupta said that the Chandigarh administration is committed to replace all diesel buses operating in the tricity area with electric buses by the year 2027-28. Apart from this, 70 more buses will be included in the fleet. In this way, the total number of electric buses will reach 508, which will significantly reduce carbon emissions, strengthen the urban transport system and improve the quality of life of the citizens.
Chandigarh City Bus Services Society (CCBSS), under Chandigarh Transport Undertaking (CTU), is operating electric buses under the PM e-Bus Sewa initiative of the Government of India. These buses were launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 14, 2026, marking the beginning of the first phase of electric buses in the city.
Gupta said that currently 25 electric buses have been included in Chandigarh under fleet observation. The remaining 100 buses will be provided in a phased manner during the year 2026.
The buses are designed and manufactured in India. Configured for intra-city (urban) public transport.
He informed that charging and infrastructure – depot based CCS2 fast charging system has been installed. Overnight scheduled charging system, full charge in approximately 2–3 hours (depending on battery condition), smart load management system to optimize power demand, earthing, fire safety and electrical safety standards are complied with. Apart from coordinated power load planning with local authorities, security and passenger amenities include low-floor entry and easy boarding and de-boarding, and CCTV cameras and internal surveillance systems.
He said that it is equipped with state-of-the-art services like passenger information display system, emergency stop and safety compliance facilities, maintenance and service support, high operational availability targets, remote diagnostics based preventive and predictive maintenance, battery health monitoring and thermal management system, dedicated service engineers and technical teams at depots, spare parts support and prompt service protocols, among others. On this occasion the delegation also visited the control room of the Intelligent Transport System. Observed the online monitoring system of various activities of the city bus service from this control room and took information.
These buses are environment friendly and do not cause pollution. Apart from reducing noise pollution in urban areas, it is an important step towards clean, green and sustainable public transport.
During the Chandigarh press tour the delegation visited Chandigarh Press Club. During this, discussions were held with journalists of various media institutions.
