The Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India, in view of the IndiGo crisis, has used its regulatory powers to ensure fair and reasonable fares on all affected routes. The Civil Aviation Ministry has fixed the maximum fare limit for the affected routes. The government has instructed airline companies not to charge passengers more fare than the fixed fare for different routes.

How much will airline companies charge for different distances?
The government has fixed the maximum fare at Rs 7500 for journeys up to 500 km. Additionally, the maximum fare for journeys between 500 to 1000 km has been fixed at Rs 12,000 and for journeys between 1000 to 1500 km the maximum fare has been fixed at Rs 15,000. It is worth noting that India’s largest airline company IndiGo is facing serious operational crisis for the last 5 days. Due to this crisis, Indigo has canceled thousands of flights in the last 5 days. Apart from this, countless IndiGo flights are getting delayed significantly.

distance maximum fare
Rs 7500 up to 500 km
500 to 1000 km Rs 12,000
1000 to 1500 km Rs 15,000
More than 1500 km Rs 18,000

Airline companies were charging many times more than the normal fare.
Due to the IndiGo crisis, other airline companies were charging passengers many times the normal fare on the affected routes. The Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA), exercising its regulatory powers to curb arbitrary practices by airlines this afternoon, has imposed fare caps on all airlines with immediate effect. Now, airlines will not be able to arbitrarily increase fares on any route.

Real-time monitoring continues
The ministry has also clarified that a special team has been formed to monitor airfares, which will monitor real-time data and coordinate with airlines and online travel platforms. Immediate action will also be taken against airlines violating the rules. MoCA says that this fare cap is an immediate and necessary step in the public interest to prevent any kind of financial exploitation of passengers.

Single seat air fare from Kolkata to Mumbai reaches ₹90,000
According to a PTI report, airline websites showed that on December 6, the price of an ‘economy’ class ticket on SpiceJet from Kolkata to Mumbai had reached ₹90,000, while an Air India ticket from Mumbai to Bhubaneswar was being sold for up to ₹84,485. Indigo canceled more than 1000 flights on Friday, and more than 400 flights were canceled on Saturday also.
