Today – May 28, 2026 – Bakrid is being celebrated in most parts of the country. Due to this, many questions are arising in the minds of everyone, from common citizens to investors. The first question is related to banks: Will banks remain open or closed across the country today? The second question is related to the stock market: Will there be any trading of shares in Sensex and Nifty today? The third question is related to gold and silver: Will trading be possible on MCX today? In this report, we will clear all your doubts and resolve them.

The stock market will remain completely closed

Let’s start with the markets themselves. On the occasion of Bakrid, the stock market will remain completely closed. There will be no trading of any kind – from equities to derivatives and securities – on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) or the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE). However, the market will open at its scheduled time on Friday, and investors will be able to resume trading in shares. After this, there will be regular weekly holidays on Saturday and Sunday.

The situation with banks is a little different

While on one hand the stock market remains completely closed on the day of Bakrid, the situation is slightly different in the case of banks. Banks are not closed in the same manner throughout the country. The date on which Bakrid will be celebrated depends on the sighting of the moon. The central government had initially fixed the Bakrid holiday on May 27, but later changed it to May 28. Therefore, banks will remain closed in most parts of the country today.

Where will banks be open and where will they be closed?

The actual date of celebrating Bakrid depends on the sighting of the moon and the instructions issued by the respective state governments. All government offices, including banks, in major cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata – as well as Union Territories – will remain closed. However, since May 27 was a holiday in Jammu and Kashmir, banks in the region may remain open today. Therefore, if you have to do any banking related work, it would be better to check the situation in your state before leaving home. Even if banks are closed in your area, online banking services will remain operational 24/7. You will be able to use services from ATM to mobile banking as you normally do. However, if you need to get a check cleared or meet the bank manager, you will have to wait till the next working day.

Trading on MCX will start after 5 pm
On the occasion of Bakri Eid, trading on MCX will begin at 5 pm instead of its usual time of 9 am. This means that the commodity market will remain closed till 5 pm. It is worth noting that on normal days – Monday to Friday – the commodity market (ie MCX) is open from 9 am to 11:55 pm.
