New Delhi, July 13 (IANS). Mouth ulcers may be small but the problems caused by them can be quite severe. They also cause pain while eating, speaking and drinking water. Usually these blisters heal on their own in a few days, but during this time people adopt many home remedies to reduce pain and burning sensation. Some natural properties are found in the things used in these remedies, which can help in reducing swelling, irritation and infection of the mouth.
According to science, mouth ulcers can occur due to many reasons. Deficiency of Vitamin B12, iron or folic acid in the body, stress, hormonal changes, oral injury or reduced ability of the body to fight diseases can be the reason behind this. Although home remedies can reduce the problem of blisters, but if the blisters persist for a long time then it is necessary to consult a doctor.
The most commonly used remedy for mouth ulcers is gargling with salt water. Sodium chloride present in salt is a normal element for the body. When salt dissolved in water is used as a gargle, it helps in reducing the number of excess bacteria present in the mouth. Salt has antimicrobial effects. It prevents harmful microorganisms from growing. Apart from this, salt water helps in removing dirt from the blister area and reducing swelling.
Honey is also an old remedy to provide relief from ulcers. Antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties are found in honey, which helps in eliminating inflammation by reducing bacteria. The natural sugars and other elements present in honey form a protective layer over the blister area, which reduces external irritation. Apart from this, some antioxidant elements found in honey are beneficial for the body.
Lauric acid present in coconut oil is considered to be an important quality of it. Lauric acid fights bacteria and inflammation. When coconut oil is applied to the blistered area, it helps in keeping the area moist. Dry skin of the mouth feels more burning, hence maintaining moisture reduces the pain. However, every person’s skin is different, so if applying oil increases the problem, then it should not be used.
Some people also use baking soda for mouth ulcers. The sodium bicarbonate present in it helps in balancing the acidic level of the mouth. Sometimes irritation and pain may increase in a more acidic environment. Mixing baking soda in water keeps the pH level of the mouth normal, due to which the burning sensation at the blister area is reduced.
Cold things like ice or cold water also help reduce pain. Cold reduces the sensitivity of the nerves in that area for some time, which reduces the feeling of pain. However, ice should not be kept directly on the blister for long periods of time. If the blisters do not heal for more than two weeks, a doctor should be examined.
