New Delhi, March 24 (IANS). In modern lifestyle, mental stress and physical fatigue have become common due to increasing work load, long hours on screen and irregular daily routine. In such a situation, the ancient yoga technique Mahamudra emerges as an effective practice, which can help in strengthening the body as well as improving health and mental balance.

In yoga texts, Mahamudra has been called ‘the step of nectar’, which means that this practice removes toxic elements from the body and fills it with new energy. ‘Mahamudra’ is derived from a Sanskrit word. ‘Maha’ means great and ‘Mudra’ means the state that gives pleasure.

According to the Ministry of AYUSH and yogic traditions, Mahamudra is an advanced Hatha Yoga practice, which is extremely effective for mental peace, balance of physical energy and spiritual development. It is considered helpful in reducing stress and improving blood circulation.

This posture activates the Swadhisthana Chakra, which removes fatigue from the body and mind. Its practice controls Apana Vayu (one of the five main pranas, which is located in the ‘pelvic area’ below the navel), which helps in awakening the dormant Kundalini in the body.

It is very easy to do, although it is a bit difficult for a beginner practitioner, but doing it regularly can provide many benefits to the body. To do this, first of all sit comfortably in Sukhasana or Padmasana posture. Now spread both legs forward. Turn to the right and place the heel near the perineum (between the anus and the genitals). Keep the left leg straight. Take a deep breath and bend forward while holding the breath (Kumbhaka).

Hold the toe of the left foot with both hands. Bring the head towards the knees. Apply Mula Bandha (contracting the pelvic floor) and Jalandhara Bandha (pulling the chin to the chest). Wait for a few seconds, then exhale and return to normal. Repeat with the other leg. Do 3-5 times in the beginning, increase gradually.

If you have back or spine problems, consult a doctor or yoga guru before doing this asana. Pregnant women and people with high blood pressure should not use it without specialist consultation.
