Dhaka, October 8 (IANS). Three more people died due to dengue in Bangladesh in the 24 hours till Wednesday morning, taking the death toll from the mosquito-borne disease to 220 in 2025. Local media gave this information.

According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), 700 more people were hospitalized due to viral fever during this period, taking the number of infected people to 52,104. Three deaths were reported from Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), United News of Bangladesh (UNB) reported.

According to DGHS, Dhaka North City Corporation (155), Dhaka Division (149), Dhaka South City Corporation (110), Barishal Division (105), Chittagong Division (61), Khulna Division (45), Mymensingh Division (33), Rajshahi Division (31), Rangpur Division (6) and New cases were reported in Sylhet division (5). Currently, 2,473 patients are undergoing treatment in various hospitals in Bangladesh.

A total of 575 people died due to dengue in 2024. According to DGHS, 1,01,214 dengue cases were reported in Bangladesh during the same period and 1,00,040 people recovered.

Dengue is a viral infection caused by dengue virus (DENV), which is spread to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), dengue spreads throughout the world in areas with tropical and subtropical climates. Mostly found in urban areas. Prevention and control of dengue depends on vector control. There is no specific treatment for dengue, however, early detection and access to appropriate medical care reduces mortality from severe dengue.

Last week, Bangladesh’s health directorate urged all patients suffering from fever to immediately go to hospital to get tested for dengue and seek medical attention if the report is positive, local media reported on Sunday.

Speaking to Bangladesh’s leading newspaper, The Daily Star, Abu Hossain Moinul Ahsan, director (hospitals), Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), said the delay in hospitalization is a major reason for the increase in dengue deaths.

A statement issued by the DGHS said, “Primarily, dengue infection becomes complicated due to delay in reaching the hospital, leaving little chance for effective treatment. Delayed hospitalization or delay in consultation with doctors makes treatment of complicated cases difficult.”

The hospital administration said that adequate medicines, saline and dengue test kits are available in all hospitals. However, he also said that it is necessary to ensure early detection of dengue, treatment as per guidelines and effective mosquito control measures.
