New Delhi, December 18 (IANS). In the winter season, cough, cold, sore throat and lung related problems spread rapidly. In such a situation, Banafsha, a special herb of Ayurveda proves to be very beneficial. It is also called the lifesaver of winter, because its decoction provides relief from these problems.

This plant with small fragrant flowers is simple in appearance, but its properties are very effective. In Ayurveda, Banafsha is considered cool, mild and a phlegm-pitta sedative. Its flowers and leaves are used as medicine. Its Ayurvedic properties are sweet and sour, qualities short and astringent. It mainly pacifies Kapha and Pitta dosha. It is especially useful in problems like dry cough, throat irritation and heat in the lungs.

Phlegm increases in winter, causing cough and cold. Banafsha decoction thins out mucus, moisturizes the throat and provides cooling effect to dry cough. It also provides relief from hoarseness.

Consuming Banafsha decoction provides many benefits. It soothes the respiratory tract and loosens phlegm, giving relief from dry and chronic cough. It is also beneficial in treating sore throat and hoarseness. It works like a natural tonic for singers or those who talk a lot. It reduces congestion in nose and chest and provides relief from cold and cough.

Not only this, Banafsha also calms the internal heat of the lungs caused by persistent cough. Due to its medicinal properties, it can be given to children also in small quantities.

It provides relief from allergic cough by reducing the inflammation of the respiratory tract caused by dust or cold air. Its decoction taken at night reduces cough and improves sleep.

Ayurvedacharya explains that the method of making the decoction is easy. For this, take one teaspoon of dry Banafsha, boil it on low flame in one and a half cup of water. When one cup remains, filter it. Mix honey and drink when it is lukewarm. Taking it 1-2 times a day is enough.

Banafsha is not just a medicine for cough but also keeps the lungs soft. In Ayurvedic texts it has also been called a medicine that makes the voice sweet. It also reduces the side effects of hot medicines.

Experts say that it is important to take some precautions. Do not take it in excess. Pregnant women should use it only after doctor’s advice.
