Dhaka, June 21 (IANS). Dengue outbreak is continuously increasing in Bangladesh. Two more people died due to dengue in the last 24 hours till Sunday morning, after which the number of deaths due to this mosquito-borne disease in the year 2026 has increased to nine.
According to local media reports, 220 new patients were admitted to hospitals during the same period. With this, the total number of dengue infection cases so far this year has reached 4,900. Bangladesh’s Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said the new deaths were recorded in Barishal division and Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) area.
According to DGHS data, in the year 2026, about 60 percent of the total dengue patients are men and 40 percent are women.
It is noteworthy that in the year 2025, 1,02,861 cases of dengue were reported in Bangladesh, while 413 people died due to this disease.
Meanwhile, on June 2, Bangladesh Health Minister Sardar Sakhawat Hussain had clarified that dengue vaccination program will not be started in the country at present. He said that this vaccine is currently being used only in limited countries of the world like Brazil, Malaysia, Australia and Thailand and it has not received wide acceptance globally.
The Health Minister said that the government will also consult the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNICEF on this issue. If there is positive opinion from the international community and the vaccine is considered safe and effective, only then any further decision will be taken.
He said that at present the government is not planning to launch a dengue vaccination campaign and wants to keep its position clear before the public.
Dengue is a viral infection, which is spread by the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito. Its common symptoms include high fever, headache, body ache, nausea and skin rashes. Most patients recover in one to two weeks, but severe cases may require hospitalization. If timely treatment is not received, this disease can also prove fatal.
