New Delhi, March 28 (IANS). Yoga is a precious heritage in Indian culture, which is an ancient way of keeping body and mind healthy. One of the many asanas of yoga is Garbhasana, which is considered an advanced and effective posture. This is an advanced posture of Hatha Yoga, in which the body forms a shape like a fetus (baby in the uterus).
It is excellent for balance, mental peace and gut health. It mainly strengthens the abdominal muscles, improves digestion and helps in reducing mental stress.
There are 15 major asanas described in Hatha Yoga Pradipika. It often comes under Uttana-Kurma or other Bandhas, after the group of preparatory asanas. In this, by adopting Padmasana, the hands are taken out from between the thighs and calves and brought to the ears.
Garbhasana is made up of the words ‘garbha’ and ‘asana’. Garbha means ‘fetus’ and asana means ‘posture’. By doing this asana, the posture of the body looks exactly like that of a baby in the mother’s womb in a coiled state, due to which it is called Garbhasana. Just doing this for a few minutes daily can provide many physical and mental health benefits.
The Ministry of AYUSH has emphasized the importance of this asana. According to him, Garbhasana is an advanced yoga pose which is very beneficial for calming the mind, reducing stress, improving digestion and increasing concentration. This asana increases the flexibility of the body, strengthens the joints and provides relief to the lower back.
It is very easy to do this. To do this, first of all sit on the yoga mat in Padmasana posture. After this, like in Kukkutasana, put your hands between the thighs and calves and take them out till the elbows. Now try to hold both the ears with your hands while bending both the elbows. During this, the entire weight of the body should be on the hips. Keep breathing normally and become normal after being in this position as per your capacity.
Do not do this asana in case of severe back pain, knee/hip injury or hernia.
