New Delhi, March 15 (IANS). Ignoring health is inevitable in today’s irregular lifestyle. In such a situation, the body easily falls prey to many diseases. The name of such a seemingly common but serious physical problem is blood pressure.

According to the National Health Mission (NHM), blood pressure is the main cause of many serious physical and mental problems. High blood pressure is called the “silent killer” because most people do not notice its symptoms, but if uncontrolled, it can lead to heart attack, stroke, kidney failure and other serious diseases. At the same time, low blood pressure is also called slow poison.

As per NHM guidelines, it can be easily controlled by timely testing and adopting right measures. Ignoring high blood pressure is dangerous as it gradually damages the arteries, leading to heart attack, brain stroke and kidney problems.

NHM also suggests simple and effective measures to control blood pressure, according to which-

Take the medicine on time and as prescribed by the doctor: never skip the medicine. Strictly follow the dosage and timing prescribed by the doctor. Medications such as amlodipine are common initially. Along with medication, lifestyle changes are necessary.

Measure blood pressure daily: Get your blood pressure checked regularly at home or at a health center. Measure in the morning and evening. With this, the situation can be monitored and the doctor gets information quickly.

Do not consume too much salt: Keep salt less than 5 grams (one teaspoon) daily. Reduce packaged food, pickles, chips and outside food. Reducing salt can reduce BP.

Drink enough water: Drink 8-10 glasses of water a day. BP is affected by dehydration. Water helps remove excess sodium from the body.

Exercise regularly: Do brisk walk, cycling, yoga or light exercise for 30-45 minutes daily. This keeps weight under control and can reduce BP.

Also keep in mind other important things like control weight, quit smoking, reduce alcohol, eat more fruits and vegetables, do meditation and yoga to reduce stress. High blood pressure can be easily controlled with regular checkups and lifestyle changes. If BP is uncontrolled then contact the doctor immediately.
