New Delhi, January 18 (IANS). In today’s fast-paced life, people have started eating more fried, spicy and fast food from outside instead of eating simple food at home. On top of that, staying awake till late night, stress and irregular routine has caused the most harm to the digestive system. Problems like gas, flatulence, burning sensation, constipation and loss of appetite have become common now.

To deal with this situation, many solutions have been suggested in Ayurveda, which are available in our kitchen. One of these is betel leaf, which if taken properly can be a boon for health.

Betel leaf is considered a medicinal leaf in Ayurveda. Such natural elements are found in it which balance the digestion process of the body. When we chew betel leaf after meals, first of all it speeds up the process of saliva formation in the mouth. Saliva is the first step in digestion. The better the food is digested in the mouth, the less is the burden on the stomach. Due to this, food gets broken down easily and digestive enzymes start working better as soon as it reaches the stomach.

The problem of gas and flatulence troubles almost every second person today. The natural oil and fiber present in betel leaves balance the intestinal activity. It helps in removing the gas accumulated in the intestines and reduces bloating. For this reason, chewing betel leaf after meals makes the stomach feel light and heaviness goes away. Ayurveda believes that betel leaf balances Vata dosha, which is considered a major cause of gas and pain.

Acidity and stomach irritation are also the result of wrong eating habits. According to science, betel leaves contain elements that help in balancing the excess acid produced in the stomach. It works to cool the stomach by reducing irritation.

Even in the problem of constipation, betel leaf shows gradual effect. It activates the intestinal muscles, allowing food to move forward and stool to pass easily. Consuming it regularly and properly helps in keeping the stomach clean and the need for heavy medicines can be reduced. Along with this, it also helps in increasing appetite. For children or adults who have less appetite, betel leaf works to awaken the appetite by activating the digestive juices.

Betel leaf is not limited to the stomach only. The antibacterial properties present in it help in cleaning the mouth. It reduces bad breath, gum inflammation and harmful bacteria. For this reason, in ancient times there was a tradition of eating paan after meals. In Ayurveda, it is believed that betel leaf relaxes the nerves, calms the mind and helps in reducing stress.

Betel leaves have anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. These can help in reducing inflammation in the body, keeping the skin healthy and strengthening the immune system. Its traditional use has also been reported in respiratory problems like asthma. However, in these cases it is not seen as the main treatment but as a supporting measure.

However, before adopting any kind of home remedy, definitely consult a doctor or Ayurvedic expert.
