Jerusalem, January 19 (IANS). Two children died and 55 fell ill after coming in contact with dangerous chemicals at a day care center in Jerusalem. The day care catered to children aged four months to three years. Local media gave this information.
Two children died and about 55 people were injured on Monday from carbon monoxide poisoning at a kindergarten in the Romema neighborhood, The Jerusalem Post confirmed, citing Magen David Adom. The child who was the victim of the accident was 4 months old. It was one of the children’s first days at day care, according to the ultra-Orthodox Behadrei Haredim news site.
However, the number of children treated was not immediately released, and the cause of the incident is still under investigation.
According to reports, police are investigating whether the heating system at the unlicensed daycare was faulty. This daycare was in an apartment on Ha’amem Gimel Street.
Rescue workers were running in and out of the building carrying several children at a time, he told The Times of Israel. Meanwhile, the police have detained three people working here for questioning.
According to the Kan public broadcaster, the center cared for children aged four months to three years.
The Ministry of Education told the outlet that it had no knowledge of the daycare center and had never been contacted for a license.
United Hatzalah (volunteer organization), along with Magen David Adom, arrived to evacuate the children, and workers from the Psychotrauma and Crisis Unit helped parents waiting for their children outside the Dere Care Center.
Authorities have advised local people to follow the instructions of emergency teams while responders work to identify the substance and ventilate the affected areas. The Education Ministry has confirmed that they are in contact with rescue teams.
