New Delhi, December 28 (IANS). Good sleep is a medicine for a hundred diseases, but if sleep is not complete then this deficiency can make the heart, mind and entire body sick. Less sleep not only brings fatigue, but also causes stress and weight gain, impairs digestion and weakens the immune system.
Celebrity nutritionist Pooja Makhija said that lack of sleep puts the body in survival mode, where biology itself takes control. He told that the body does not wait for the calendar or busyness. When there is less sleep, the stress goes into survival mode, where biology takes control. Due to less sleep the brain starts taking micro-sleep. This involves taking short naps of 3-15 seconds while keeping the eyes open, which is for safety. One night of less sleep increases cortisol (stress hormone) by 37 percent, which increases belly fat, hunger, anxiety and insulin resistance.
Digestion is also affected by this. Due to reduced blood flow in the intestines, gastric motility decreases by 40 percent and the intestines start leaking. Less sleep reduces fat burn by 55 percent. It also affects emotionally. Emotions intensify by 60 percent because the logical part of the brain becomes weak. The most worrying thing is the immune system, due to incomplete sleep of one night, the strength of natural killer cells falls by 50 percent.
Pooja cited many scientific studies and said that sleep is the maintenance time of the body. By ignoring this, biology itself takes its decision. He advised to choose rest yourself, otherwise the body will take it forcibly. Experts also say that 7-8 hours of sleep is the key to health.
At the same time, according to Ayurveda, lack of sleep mainly occurs due to imbalance of Vata and Pitta dosha. To overcome this, adopt home remedies. Before sleeping at night, drink warm milk mixed with a pinch of nutmeg or turmeric. It calms the mind and induces deep sleep. Take Ashwagandha, Brahmi or Jatamansi powder with milk, which reduces stress. Massage the soles of the feet with sesame oil.
Make a regular routine, go to bed on time, have a light meal in the evening, and stay away from screens. Treatments like Shirodhara or Abhyanga are also beneficial. Do yoga and pranayam. These balance the doshas and bring back natural sleep.
