Gorakhpur, February 27 (IANS). The first Mega Advanced Surgical Eye Camp of Eastern Uttar Pradesh ended on Friday at 12 Air Force Hospital, Gorakhpur. A team of doctors from the Indian Army and Indian Air Force performed life-changing surgeries on 374 people in the four-day camp.
Air Marshal B Manikantan, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Central Air Command, attended the closing ceremony. In this, Director General Armed Forces Medical Services Surgeon Vice Admiral Aarti Sarin and Director General Medical Services (Air) Air Marshal Sandeep Thareja also conducted a high-level inspection.
This camp became a ray of hope for the entire area. The camp attracted patients from rural areas of Siddharthnagar, Azamgarh, Deoria, Maharajganj and Gorakhpur, as well as from Nepal. The impact of this mission was seen through the eyes of 69 year old Amarnath Gupta, resident of Gorakhpur. For years, his failing eyesight had taken away the joy of seeing his grandchildren’s faces. An emotional Gupta after his successful surgery is one of hundreds of people who have found new light.
The team was led by Brigadier (Dr.) Sanjay Kumar Mishra, Head of Ophthalmology at Army Hospital (Research and Referral), who was supported by the surgical team including Lieutenant Colonel Ravi Chauhan and Major Amrita Joshi, whose continuous efforts made the camp a historic success. The team used world-class medical equipment flown to the area by Indian Air Force aircraft to perform the surgery.
