New Delhi, January 20 (IANS). All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi has performed more than 1,000 robotic surgeries in the last 13 months. This information was given by AIIMS on Tuesday.

Robotic surgery was introduced in the surgical department of AIIMS more than a year ago to meet difficult surgical challenges.

AIIMS said in a statement that this latest surgical robot has so far performed several surgeries, including pancreatic duodenectomy, gastrectomy, esophagectomy, colectomy, anterior resection for gastrointestinal malignancy, kidney transplantation, and minimally invasive resection of thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal and pancreas for endocrine tumors. Hepatobiliary procedures include.

Private hospitals in metropolitan cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Chennai have adopted robotic systems in specialties like urology and gynecology over the last ten years, but their adoption in government hospitals, especially for general surgery, has been much lower. AIIMS is filling this gap by bringing advanced robotic capabilities into the public healthcare setup, and ensuring that patients from different socio-economic backgrounds can benefit from this technology.

Head of the department, Professor Sunil Chumber said that AIIMS is an academic institute. More than a hundred surgical residents are undergoing their surgical training in the department. Successful installation of the system will provide our resident doctors complete opportunity to receive training on this latest technology during their residency period. This has put our training curriculum at par with any renowned medical institute in the world.

He said that robotic surgery has many advantages, which include less blood loss, less time in hospital and faster recovery of patients.

Speaking to news agency IANS, Dr. Mohit Joshi, Additional Professor, Surgery Department, AIIMS, said that this is a new type of technology and AIIMS, which is India’s number one institute, is always at the forefront of any new technology or advancement happening anywhere in the country.

He said that our experience has been very good, because almost all the surgeons in our department are trained in robotic surgery and are actively performing surgeries. Since our department has its own surgical robot, we have a dedicated OT specifically for robotic procedures.
