New Delhi, December 13 (IANS). Be it work pressure or irregular daily routine, these are becoming the cause of many physical as well as mental problems. In such a situation, in today’s time, most of the people easily fall prey to stress, migraine and many head diseases. Ayurveda suggests Nasya Karma as the best treatment for head diseases.
Nasya Karma included in the Panchakarma of Ayurveda is mentioned in texts like Charak Samhita, Sushruta Samhita and Ashtanga Hridayam. These texts recommend including it in daily routine.
In Nasya, drops of special medicated oil, ghee or decoction are inserted through the nose, which directly affect the brain, head, throat, eyes, ears and nervous system. Ayurveda says “Nasa Hi Shirso Dwaramya,” meaning the nose is the main gate to the head. Nasya is so effective because the nerves of the nose are directly connected to the brain.
Nasya Karma starts showing results within a few minutes. It melts the phlegm and expels it, thereby reducing heaviness of the head, blocked nose and stiffness of the forehead. Nasya balances Prana Vayu, which increases mental peace, concentration and memory power. It is also called youth therapy because it brings natural glow to the face.
Nasya Karma provides not just one but many benefits. It provides relief from migraine and headache. Medicinal oil calms the nerves and reduces stress hormones. The phlegm melts and clears the nasal passages, makes breathing easier, which provides relief from sinus and allergies. The nerves of the brain relax and the mind remains calm. The problems of stress, anxiety and insomnia go away. Shiro-dhatu becomes stronger, roots get nourishment, thereby strengthening the hair. The efficiency of head and facial organs increases. Eyesight and voice improve. Oxygen supply to the brain is better. This sharpens memory and increases focus.
Ayurvedacharya explains which oils are useful in Nasya Karma. Anu oil is used for migraine-stress, Shadbindu oil for nasal congestion-hair, Brahmi ghee for memory, sesame oil for daily use, and garlic siddha oil for heavy cough.
Experts also tell the correct method and time of Nasya Karma. The right time for Nasya is between 6 to 9 am in the morning or 4 to 6 pm in the evening. For this, first of all massage the nose and face with lukewarm sesame oil. Take hot steam for 1-2 minutes. Lie on your back and turn your head upward. After this, put 2 drops of oil in each nostril. During this, breathe through the mouth, expel excess phlegm and rest for about 15 minutes.
Nasya maintains the balance of not only the nose but the entire brain, emotions and face. It has been considered safe and effective in Yoga, Ayurveda and modern neuro research. However, Ayurvedacharya recommends not to do it immediately after food, before bathing, in case of severe cold, fever or pregnancy without expert advice.
