Jaipur, May 12 (IANS). Taking serious note of the death of pregnant women in the Medical College Hospital, Kota, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla chaired a high-level review meeting at the CAD Auditorium in Kota on Tuesday.
In this meeting, Principal Secretary of Medical Department Gayatri Rathore, Kota Divisional Commissioner Anil Aggarwal, District Collector Piyush Samaria, and Medical College Hospital and J.K. Superintendents and medical officers of many hospitals including Lone Hospital were present. During the review, Birla sought detailed factual information about the incident.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla also assessed the findings of the investigation team sent from Jaipur and reviewed the corrective measures initiated so far.
Describing the deaths of pregnant women as an “extremely sensitive matter”, Birla said negligence in medical care will not be tolerated under any circumstances. He directed the officials to hold those responsible for the incident accountable and formulate strict protocols to prevent such incidents in future.
Birla announced that a team of experts from Delhi-based All India Institute of Ayurvedic Sciences (AIIMS) and other central medical institutions would soon visit hospitals in the Kota-Bundi region.
This panel of experts will investigate the causes of infections in operation theatres, inspect operation procedures and assess the hospital infrastructure and management systems. The team will then prepare a detailed report and recommend Standard Operating Procedures (STC) to address the deficiencies found during the inspection.
He also instructed doctors and medical staff to exercise utmost caution during surgeries.
The Lok Sabha Speaker directed the Kota Divisional Commissioner to constitute a committee under his leadership, which will inspect all the government hospitals in the district. The committee will assess the availability of medical resources, sanitation systems, nursing care, emergency services and overall hospital management.
It will also prepare a roadmap to address the shortcomings and improve healthcare delivery. Birla stressed that maintaining public confidence in government hospitals is of paramount importance.
The Lok Sabha Speaker directed officials to strengthen hospital hygiene systems, improve nursing and emergency services and avoid any negligence in patient care. Instructions were also issued to take strict action against negligent staff to ensure better medical treatment to patients and their families and to maintain public confidence in government health institutions.
