In today’s busy lifestyle, we often ignore minor health problems. Symptoms such as a persistent cough, heartburn, or minor difficulty swallowing—which often seem minor—can sometimes be early signs of a serious illness. One such serious disease is Esophageal Cancer. Esophageal cancer is a type of cancer that spreads very quickly. If it is identified in the early stages, its treatment can be successful to a great extent; But, the real challenge is that its initial symptoms are often very mild, which people often ignore. So, let us know what is esophageal cancer, what are its early warning signs, and which people are at higher risk of getting this cancer.

What is esophageal cancer?

Esophagus is a long, tube-like structure that connects our throat to our stomach. When we eat food, this tube transports the food from the throat to the stomach. Cancer occurs when the cells present on the inner surface of this tube start growing in an abnormal and uncontrolled manner. Over time, this cancer can slowly spread to nearby tissues and organs.

Who is at greater risk?

Certain habits and health conditions increase the risk of developing this cancer. This risk increases with increasing age, and it is more common in men than women. Additionally, people who smoke or consume alcohol have a higher risk of this cancer. Also, people who suffer from chronic acidity or GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), who are obese, who consume less fruits and vegetables in their diet, or who frequently consume hot beverages are also at higher risk of this cancer.

Early warning signs you shouldn’t ignore

1. **Difficulty swallowing food (Dysphagia):** Initially, people may have trouble swallowing solid food; Later, this problem can increase so much that they start having trouble swallowing liquids like water.

2. **Weight loss without any reason:** If you are losing weight rapidly without any dieting or vigorous exercise, then it could be a sign of esophageal cancer.

3. **Heartburn:** A feeling of burning, pressure or pain in the chest—these are symptoms that people often ignore, mistaking them for simple indigestion or “gas.” But, it can also be a sign of esophageal cancer.

4. **Persistent cough or hoarse voice:** If you have been coughing continuously for a long time, or your voice has become hoarse (hoarse), then be careful. This may be an early warning sign of esophageal cancer. 5. Frequent difficulty in swallowing – Food getting stuck in the throat while eating or frequent coughing can also be signs of esophageal cancer.

How to stop it?

Although it is not possible to completely prevent esophageal cancer, its risk can be reduced to a great extent by adopting some habits. These include avoiding smoking and alcohol consumption. Include fresh fruits and green vegetables in your diet. Apart from this, it is also very important to maintain proper body weight and exercise daily. If you feel frequent cough, acidity or burning sensation, do not ignore these symptoms; Consult a doctor in time.
