New Delhi, April 7 (IANS). Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi interacted with nurses from Kerala on Tuesday. During this, Rahul Gandhi called him the foundation of the health care system. Rahul Gandhi’s comments came during a video conversation, in which Rahul Gandhi interacted with a group of nurses and discussed the realities and challenges faced by healthcare professionals in India. During these conversations, nurses highlighted a number of systemic issues, including time constraints, understaffing, and limited opportunities for career advancement.
One nurse said that heavy work responsibilities often leave little time to interact properly with patients. He said that it is important to understand the problems of patients, but due to workload, we often do not have enough time to do so.
In response to a question related to opportunities available abroad, some nurses said that even though many people do not want to leave India, the better working conditions and organized system in countries like the UK attract professionals. One nurse said that in the UK, the long but frequent shifts and hourly pay system provide better economic and professional stability than India’s fragmented schedules.
Another nurse pointed to limited opportunities for career advancement in India, saying that gaining expertise often requires higher qualifications, such as a master’s degree, making career advancement even more challenging.
When asked about the main problems in India’s healthcare system, nurses stressed the acute shortage of staff. A nurse said the ratio was too high. Often only about 20 nurses have to manage about 100 patients, highlighting the pressure on resources.
Sharing their experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic, nurses recalled that they went above and beyond their normal roles during emergency situations. A nurse said that due to the crisis we also conducted surgeries during Covid. We had never imagined that the situation would become so serious.
He also emphasized that improvement in nursing education is very important for the development of this profession in India. Highlighting the strengths of Kerala’s nursing community, the participants credited quality education, hard work and empathy as the main factors behind its reputation.
