New Delhi, June 27 (IANS). Nowadays, people do different types of exercises to stay fit. Some go out for a walk early in the morning, some do running, some adopt yoga and meditation. At the same time, whenever it comes to strength training, people often think that it is necessary only for bodybuilders. However, a new study published online in the British Journal of Sports Medicine will completely change your thinking.
According to the new study, strength training is not limited to just building muscles or bodybuilding, but it is important for every age and every person. It not only strengthens the body, but can also play an important role in longevity and better health. This study has been published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, in which health data of about 1.47 lakh people was analyzed. These people were followed for about 30 years. During this time, scientists understood their exercise habits, who did cardio, who did strength training and who maintained a balance of both.
The study revealed that those who did strength training were found to have less risk of many serious diseases. Especially a reduction in the risk of heart disease, cancer and premature death was observed. The most interesting thing is that for this there is no need to spend hours in the gym.
According to research, strength training of about 90 to 120 minutes a week (ie about one and a half to two hours) was considered to be the most beneficial. The risk of death was found to be very low in such people. It also came to light that even if someone does more than this, the additional benefit does not increase that much.
The study also found that people who do strength training even in small amounts, also get some benefit. But the greatest effect was seen when strength training was combined with cardio exercise. Those who did light weight training along with activities like walking, running, cycling, were found to be in the best health. The risk of death in such people was seen to be 50 percent less compared to those who did not exercise at all.
According to scientists, both cardio and strength training have different effects on the body. Cardio strengthens the heart and lungs and improves blood circulation, while strength training maintains muscles, bones and body strength. Both together give a kind of ‘full protection’ to the body, which can reduce the risk of many problems that occur with aging.
However, the researchers also clarified that this is an observational study. In this, people themselves had given information about their exercises, so there is a possibility of some error. This does not directly prove that strength training is the cause of longevity, but there does appear to be a strong connection between the two.
