New Delhi, May 17 (IANS). India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Sunday that there is a possibility of severe heat in Delhi and many parts of North India in the next few days, the temperature may increase by 3 to 5 degrees Celsius.

Heat wave to severe heat wave conditions are likely to prevail over the plains of northwest India and central India for several days of the week, the IMD said in a statement.

The Meteorological Department has issued a severe forecast for the plains of North, North-West and Central India and has predicted severe heat throughout the week. The department says that there is no hope of people getting relief from heat wave in these areas.

The effect of rising temperatures has started becoming visible in Delhi and NCR, the mercury has risen above normal. On Saturday, Safdarjung (which represents the city’s weather) recorded a maximum temperature of 40 degrees Celsius, which is 0.4 degrees above normal.

Temperatures are likely to rise gradually throughout the week over many parts of northwest India, including Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana.

In next week’s weather forecast, the Meteorological Department said that there is a possibility of a gradual increase of 3-5 degrees Celsius in the maximum temperature in many parts of North-West India till May 21 and there will be no significant change in it during May 22-23.

The Meteorological Department further said that there is a possibility of heat wave in Rajasthan from May 17 to 23, while in some areas of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi, the temperature is likely to rise from May 18 to 23. There is a possibility of heat wave in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh from 17 to 21 May.

Moderate to severe heat wave is likely to occur in some parts of Uttar Pradesh next week, while southern parts of Telangana will also be hit by extreme heat.

The Meteorological Department has predicted moderate rain with strong winds and hailstorm over parts of Madhya Pradesh and Vidarbha and parts of western India on May 17 and 18.

Several northeastern states, including Assam and Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura, are likely to experience rain with lightning and thundershowers on May 18, while Arunachal Pradesh is likely to receive heavy rain during the same period.
