New Delhi, 26 September (IANS). Experts said on Friday that 100 percent tariff imposed on pharmaceuticals by US President Donald Trump will not harm India, but will definitely harm America.
The 100 percent tariff of Trump, which is implemented from October 1, is on the import of branded and patented medicines. This tariff will not apply to generic drugs.
Economist Akash Jindal told IANS, “100 percent tariff on pharmaceuticals will be very harmful for America, as drugs are very important for any economy. In India, our government is trying to reduce drug prices. In such a short time, it cannot take a new factory in America in such a short time. It takes time to set up a new factory. If they are settling a new factory. We have skilled workers. “
He described Tariff as a mistake and warned that the US government would have to face opposition from its own people.
Businessman Dr. Niranjan Hiranandani said, “This will harm not India but America. This tariff imposed by America is very wrong.”
Hiranandani said, “America will suffer the most due to applying 100 percent tariffs, not India. Drugs are the most expensive in America; the cheapest medicines are available in India. If they want inflation, let them do it.”
Economist Santosh Mehrotra told IANS, “There was no tariff of any kind on pharmaceutical drugs and electronics products till now. But now pharmaceuticals have also been included in it. However, 100 percent tariff is not on generic medicines. India sends only a lot of effects to the US.
America is the largest export market for pharmaceutical goods for India. According to the Pharmaceutical Export Promotion Council, in FY 24, India went to the US, 31 per cent or $ 8.7 billion (Rs 7,72,31 crore) out of India’s $ 27.9 billion exports. In the first six months of 2025, pharma products worth $ 3.7 billion (Rs 32,505 crore) were exported.
