New Delhi, October 19 (IANS). ‘World Osteoporosis Day’ is celebrated every year on 20 October. The purpose of this day is to make people aware about bone health. Nowadays most of the people are struggling with this problem. The problem of osteoporosis is more common especially in women after the age of 50.

If we understand osteoporosis in common language, it is a condition in which bones become weak, their density decreases and fractures can occur even with the slightest injury or pressure. Often people do not know about it until the bone is broken, hence it is also called a silent disease.

According to doctors, this disease is related to aging, hormonal changes and deficiency of calcium or vitamin D. Usually fractures of the hip, wrist or spine are the initial signs of this disease. Walking bent over, frequent pain or delayed recovery after injury can be its symptoms.

According to Ayurveda, osteoporosis is directly related to the imbalance of Vata dosha. When Vata dosha increases, the strength of the body starts decreasing and the density of bones starts decreasing.

Interestingly, this understanding also matches with modern science, because science also says that age and hormonal changes affect the bones.

Many methods have been suggested in Ayurveda to prevent and cure this disease. First comes chemotherapy, i.e. strengthening the body from within. It slows down age-related decline.

The second one is oil massage. Massaging with Mahanarayan oil, Dashmool oil or Chandanabala Lakshadweep oil deeply nourishes the bones and joints.

The third solution is herbal medicines, such as Laksha Guggulu, Mahayogaraj Guggulu, Pravala Pishti and Mukta Shukti Bhasma. These traditional medicines help in increasing the strength of bones.

Besides, emphasis has also been laid on food and lifestyle. Ayurveda says that foods like horse gram, ginger, garlic, drumstick and ash gourd strengthen bones. Fruits like pomegranate, mango and grapes maintain nutrition in the body.
