New Delhi. The Union Cabinet has today approved the Terms of Reference of the 8th Pay Commission. Earlier in January, the government had recommended the formation of the 8th Pay Commission. The recommendations of the 8th Central Pay Commission will be considered effective from January 1, 2026. This Commission will be a temporary body and will have a Chairman, a Member and a Member-Secretary. The Commission will give recommendations within 18 months from the date of its constitution. Giving information, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that in-principle approval for the formation of the 8th Central Pay Commission was recently given in January and within a very short time the Commission has been formally constituted. This is a big step that requires extensive deliberations.

The Union Minister said that several ministries like Defence, Home, Railways and Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), which have a large number of Central government employees, were part of the process. He further said, there are about 50 lakh employees of the Central Government and discussions were also held with many State Governments, most of which extended their cooperation. The 8th Pay Commission is expected to submit its report within 18 months. New pay commissions are constituted every 10 years to revise the salaries, allowances and other facilities of government employees. Earlier, the 7th Pay Commission was implemented on January 1, 2016. Then about 1 crore government employees and pensioners were benefited from it.
