New Delhi. West Bengal TMC leader Mukul Roy has suffered a major setback under the anti-defection law. Calcutta High Court has canceled his assembly membership. Mukul Roy became MLA in May 2021 by winning the election on BJP ticket. But after some time in August, he left BJP and joined Mamata Banerjee’s party Trinamool Congress. After this, Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Subhendu Adhikari had demanded Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee to disqualify Mukul Roy from the Assembly, but his petition was rejected.

After this, BJP leader Shubhendu Adhikari and MLA Ambika Roy had filed a petition in the Calcutta High Court challenging the decision of the West Bengal Assembly Speaker. On which today the High Court bench gave its decision and canceled the MLA of Mukul Roy. While reacting to the court’s decision, BJP leader Subhendu Adhikari said, in a historic decision and the first of its kind in West Bengal (possibly in India as well), a division bench of the Calcutta High Court comprising Justice Debangsu Basak and Justice Mohammad Shabbar Rashidi has disqualified Mukul Roy as an MLA due to defection. Ultimately truth prevails, even if it is delayed a little.

The official said, the Honorable Court in its judgment has also left no doubt on the partisan attitude of the Assembly Speaker in taking decisions in defection cases while maintaining the sanctity of the Constitution, especially the Tenth Schedule. I wholeheartedly welcome this historic decision. Union Minister of State Sukant Majumdar said that this should have happened long ago under the anti-defection law. Now this decision will become an example for others. This decision is very important to clean the politics of Bengal.
