The mortal remains of two Indians who lost their lives in the drone attack in Sohar, Oman, were brought to India on 17 March 2026. A total of 5 Indians have died so far amid the ongoing dispute in West Asia. Additional Secretary (Gulf) of the Ministry of External Affairs, Asim Mahajan, said that continuous efforts are being made to bring back the bodies of the remaining three Indians soon.

How did this accident happen and what is the situation now?

On 13 March 2026, a drone attack took place in Al Awhi Industrial Zone in Sohar, Oman. In this attack, 2 Indians lost their lives and 10 people were injured. According to the latest update from the Ministry of External Affairs, till now 5 injured have been discharged from the hospital and 5 are undergoing treatment. No one’s condition is serious. In view of the increasing dispute in the Gulf region, more than 2 lakh 20 thousand Indians have returned home safely since 28 February 2026. The Indian Embassy in Muscat is working 24 hours.

Return of dead bodies and government help for families

Death Certificate and NOC is issued by the embassy to bring back dead bodies from Gulf countries. If the family or company is unable to bear the expenses, the Government of India provides full assistance under the Indian Community Welfare Fund (ICWF). Usually, the cost of bringing a dead body from Oman is around 160 Omani Rials, which is being covered by the government in this time of crisis. Apart from this, a special control room is functioning in New Delhi, from where families of expatriates living in the Gulf can get help and information 24 hours.
