Arvind Marg, which is called the heart of South Delhi, has become a cause of trouble for the drivers these days. This important route from AIIMS Delhi to historic Mehrauli has now become synonymous with severe traffic jams. Be it time to go to office or return in the evening, thousands of vehicles are seen moving here every day. Getting stuck in traffic for hours has now become a part of the daily routine of common people, which not only leads to wastage of time but also increases fuel consumption and pollution. This situation is now becoming unbearable for the local residents and travelers who regularly use this route.
After increasing complaints from local people, the government prepared a blueprint for road widening and traffic diversion.
Taking seriously the deteriorating conditions and the complaints of the general public including local public representatives, the Delhi government has now taken steps towards making this route jam-free. The administration has prepared a detailed action plan for a permanent solution to this problem. The heart of the plan involves widening of the road to provide adequate space for vehicles to pass through. Apart from this, new options for traffic diversion and construction of underpasses at strategic locations are also being considered. The aim of the government is to make the movement of vehicles smooth through these changes and eliminate the bottlenecks (narrow roads) on Arvind Marg.
In view of the situation getting out of control after the opening of schools, emphasis is on solving the problems before the new academic session.
One of the main reasons for the heavy traffic pressure on Arvind Marg is that there are many big and renowned schools and educational institutions located on this route. The administration assesses that as soon as schools open with full capacity, the situation here becomes out of control in the morning and afternoon hours. The queues of school buses and parents’ vehicles completely bring the normal traffic to a halt. Keeping this in mind, the government is trying to control this problem of traffic jam to a great extent before the commencement of the upcoming school session, so that children and common passengers do not have to face such problems in future.
The proposal to build an underpass and a separate school corridor near the Mehrauli temple will provide great relief to traffic and security.
The plan being prepared to deal with the jam also includes some concrete infrastructure changes. The most prominent proposal in this is to build an underpass near the Mehrauli temple, which will help in making the flow of traffic uninterrupted. Along with this, work is also underway on a plan to create a special ‘school-corridor’. The purpose of this corridor is to separate school vehicles and general traffic. If this plan comes to fruition, not only will the problem of traffic jam be reduced, but the possibility of road accidents will also be reduced to a great extent, making this route safe for everyone.
