A child who was born in Punjab in the year 1901, in whose name the name of his village is attached and growing up he witnessed the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. Then he went to America with this big wound in his heart, but when he returned, he also fought for freedom. The name of this young man was Pratap Singh Kairon, who later became the powerful CM of Punjab and also got the credit for settling Punjab in a new way.
Pratap Singh Kairon was born on 1 October 1901 in Kairon village of Amritsar district. Pratap Singh Kairon, who belonged to a Sikh-Jat family, went to America and got a master’s degree in two subjects each. After his studies, he returned to India in 1929 and started publishing a newspaper. After a few days he entered politics, the newspaper was closed. Participated in the independence of the country and also went to jail.
In the beginning, Pratap Singh Kairon again joined the Congress in the Shiromani Akali Dal. After this won the elections, became a minister from MLA and then reached the chair of the Chief Minister. Thereafter, became close to Jawaharlal Nehru regarding his works. Pratap Singh Kairon was considered the leader of the Green Revolution in Punjab. Apart from this, the credit of settling Punjab after the partition of the country is also given to Kairon.
Pratap Singh was the Chief Minister of Punjab from January 1956 to June 1964. Pratap Singh Kairon was behind the advancement of Punjab in agriculture, employment and other conditions with time. However, after the death of Jawaharlal Nehru, his political vehicle also got derailed. After this, allegations of corruption were also leveled against Kairon, after which he resigned from the post of Chief Minister.
When the investigation started in the corruption allegations, the committee found all the allegations against him to be baseless and gave a clean chit. After this Pratap Singh Kairon launched a campaign against the then government, but he was assassinated after some time. On the day of the incident, Pratap Singh Kairon was returning from Delhi to Amritsar in a Fiat car on 6 February 1965.
During this journey, when his car reached Rasoi village in Sonepat, some assailants shot and killed him. Apart from his personal assistant, two IAS officers were also killed in this murder. Hundreds of people were interrogated after this murder and the sons of the Kairons suspected political assassination. In the murder case, the police filed a charge sheet and the trial of the case started from May 1966.
Sucha Singh, Baldev Singh, Nahar Singh, Sukh Lal and Daya Singh were made accused in this chargesheet. It is said that Sucha Singh had killed Kairon, who had punished his father and friend, with the intention of taking revenge. In 1969, except Daya Singh, the rest were sentenced to death. After this, the absconding Daya Singh was caught in April 1972 and the other four were hanged in October 1972. After this, Daya Singh was also sentenced to death in 1978, but after several mercy petitions, he was converted to life imprisonment in 1991.
