A study published in the *Journal of Personality and Social Psychology* found that couples who showed a lot of love in the beginning of their relationship had a higher risk of divorce later. Researchers followed 168 couples for 13 years and found that those who showed more romantic and passionate love at the beginning of their relationship were more likely to break up over time. According to the study, such couples showed about one-third more love than couples whose marriages remained happy and strong for a long time.
**Why is too much love dangerous?**
Claire Stott, data analyst and relationship psychologist at dating app Badoo, told *Business Insider* that too much love can often be an attempt to mask underlying problems in the relationship, such as a lack of trust or poor communication. According to him, this kind of deep love is difficult to last for a long time. The more “too much” a relationship is in the beginning, the more empty it feels later on.
**Why does too much love act as a “red flag”?**
Experts agree that every relationship goes through a “honeymoon phase,” in which both partners feel very close to each other. But, it’s completely normal for that initial excitement to wane a bit over time. The problem arises when a relationship – from the very beginning – is built on too much emotion. In such cases, as the initial excitement begins to wane, the partner begins to feel as if the love has ended. As Claire Stott explains, a strong relationship cannot be built on love and affection alone; Honesty, trust, open communication and supporting each other are the real foundations of a long-lasting relationship. If love is being given too much in a relationship, it may also be a sign of overcompensation.
