Yumnam Khemchand Singh took oath as the Chief Minister of Manipur. After being elected leader of the BJP legislature party, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla administered the oath of office to him. Macha Kipgen and Losi Dikho took oath as the new Deputy Chief Ministers of Manipur. Losi Dikho is a Naga People’s Front (NPF) MLA. President’s rule was imposed in Manipur from 13 February, the then Chief Minister N. Four days after Biren Singh resigned amid long-running caste violence in the state. Biren Singh had resigned on February 9 following continued unrest between the non-tribal Meitei and tribal Kuki communities.
A new era will begin in Manipur: BJP
Caste violence had erupted in Manipur on May 3, 2023, following the ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ organized to protest against the demand for granting Scheduled Tribe status to the Meitei community. The violence left more than 260 people dead, nearly 1,500 injured and more than 70,000 displaced. Manipur BJP said, “Under the experienced and visionary leadership of Yumnam Khemchand Singh, Manipur is set to move forward on the path of peace, development and good governance, which will usher in a new era of stability and progress in the state.”
BJP held several meetings in the last few months
The BJP central leadership held several rounds of meetings over the past few months with its Meitei and Kuki MLAs, allies NPF and NPP, and some independent MLAs to assess whether the political situation is conducive to forming a government.
