Kolkata, June 10 (IANS). A new signboard was installed on Wednesday in the Jagannath temple complex located in Digha in East Medinipur district. The move came a day after the state government announced a change in the official name of the temple complex.

In the new signboard, the word “Dham” has been removed and cultural center has been written in its place. A flex board with the name Sri Sri Jagannath Cultural Center was installed within the temple premises.

There was already a controversy going on regarding calling this temple of Digha as “Jagannath Dham”. Although the complex was recorded as a cultural center in official documents, the previous Trinamool Congress government had added the word “Dham” to its name after the construction of the temple.

Suvendu Adhikari, who was the leader of the opposition at that time, had also raised objection on this issue.

After the formation of the new government in the state, Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced that the Jagannath temple of Digha will now be known by the same name as recorded in the official records.

After the revised name, this complex will now be called “Sri Sri Jagannath Cultural Centre” and not “Jagannath Dham”.

The Chief Minister made this announcement on Tuesday after accepting the proposal given by Mohan Charan Majhi.

The very next day after the announcement, a flex board with the new name was installed in the temple premises. Earlier there was a signboard written “Jagannath Dham” at the main entrance of the temple, which has now been removed.

In its place, a new board named “Sri Sri Jagannath Cultural Centre” has been installed inside the temple premises.

Ramnagar BJP MLA Chandrashekhar Mandal and Kolkata-based ISKCON president Radharman Das, who is one of the trustees of Digha Jagannath temple, were present during the event.

The MLA said, “We do not want change, we want reforms. Our government has not canceled the project of the previous government but has improved it. Similarly, due to several controversies regarding Digha Jagannath Dham, ‘Dham’ has been removed from its name and it has been changed to ‘Digha Jagannath Temple and Cultural Centre’.”
