Kolkata, 18 September (IANS). Leader of Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly Shubhendu Adhikari said on Wednesday that the decision to knock the Calcutta High Court by a group of industrialists against the state government’s decision to cancel the industry incentive scheme in the state was inevitable.

The said scheme, set up by the state government to encourage the former Chief Minister of West Bengal, was launched by the East Left Front government under the leadership of late Buddhadev Bhattacharya in the financial year 2001-02 and the main objective of the scheme was to encourage industrial investment in the state.

However, in March this year, the state government passed a bill in the state assembly, called the incentive schemes and obligations in the nature of West Bengal grant and encouragement, 2025, through which the incentives being given to the existing industries in the state were withdrawn.

Earlier this week, a group of industrialists approached the Calcutta High Court against the decision to cancel the incentives. He believed that the decision of the state government was unconstitutional.

The Calcutta High Court will hear all the petitions filed by various industrialists in this case in November.

On Wednesday, the Leader of the Opposition termed the decision disastrous and unconstitutional.

Leader of the Opposition Shubhendu Adhikari said, “Despite strong opposition from BJP MLAs, the bill passed due to the majority of Trinamool Congress in March 2025. The ego of the Trinamool Congress dominated and shamelessly abolished all industries incentives.”

He claimed that industrialists have corrected the Calcutta High Court in this case.

He further said that it is a well-planned mistake to drive away the remaining industries from West Bengal. Mamta Banerjee’s government is turning our state into an industrial cemetery. Believing businesses who trusted West Bengal and created employment for our people. The Trinamool Congress is scaring investors and ensuring that our youth remain unemployed. This is not a rule, but a situation like an economic chaotic.
